General experience

Fully compatible smartphones

  • No Android smartphones are fully compatible with our measurement.
    • So far no Android smartphone could deliver high quality FullHD video at 240 FPS for a long period of time.
  • Only iPhone 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 is fully compatible with our measurement.

Partially working smartphones

Some users have been using these smartphone models successfully with the SPINSIGHT beta App on Android:

  • Google Pixel 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
    • Sustained measurement only at lower resolution with good cooling.
  • Samsung Galaxy S-Series S8, S9, S10, S20, S21, S22, S24, S25
    • Sustained measurement only at lower resolution with good cooling.
    • Needs latest Samsung OS updates.

Problematic but somewhat working

  • Google Pixel 6a, 7a
    •  Lower resolution not supported, thermal problems.
  • Samsung Galaxy S23
    • Bad image quality in High Speed Video, needs very bright room.

Usually not working

There are major problems with these phones. While the camera test may run successfully, the actual measurement is usually not working for some reason.

  • Newest Samsung Galaxy S-Series model
    • Samsung usually does not support High Speed Video for Apps at release.
    • Often Samsung did add partial support about a year after release. The quality varies.
    • The upcoming S26 will likely not support our measurement during 2026.
  • Samsung Galaxy US-Models of S8, S9, S10
    • The US-models of those smartphones use a different processor and do not work at all.
  • Samsung A-Series
    • 240 fps is not supported.
    • Some may work in 120 fps mode.
  • Xiaomi
    • Only some high-end models seem to work.
  • Huawei
    • Various problems.

Testing your Smartphone

When you install the App it may ask you to "Run Tests". At the end it will show an FPS number for reduced HD resolution and FullHD resolution. With 120 FPS it will not measure above 100 rps. With 240 FPS the full measurement range will be available. This test only checks if camera images arrive for a few seconds. The image quality and sustained performance need further real-world tests.

To test if the measurement is actually working you need to measure spin with it using a SPINSIGHT ball for several minutes. You can go to "Open Play" and look at the "Timeline" to see if most measurements arrive as expected. If it works well for you for several minutes, you can use it.

Please note that using HD resolution leads to a smaller measurement window and it might not cover the full table width. You can optimimize this by adjusting the tilt angle of the smartphone (tilt it up a bit higher, so it can see higher top-spin balls) and by changing the smartphone placement (lower or higher, maybe closer to the table).

After you tested your device please rate your device in the App with 1/2/3/4/5 stars to inform other users. Your rating will then be visible on this page: https://app.spinsight.com/android-measurement-device-ratings
